What is the mass of salicylic acid is required to produce 150 g of aspirin?
Salicylic acid reacts with the anhydride acetic acid to form aspirin, acetylsalicylic acid. If the percent yield of this reaction is 78.5%, what mass of hydrogen Salicylic is required to produce 150. g of aspirin? 2 C7H6O3 +> C4H6O3>> 2 H2O C9H8O4 + + salicylic acid acetic anhydride = aspirin
Moles aspirin = 150 g / 180.160 g / mol = 0.833 the ratio of salicylic acid and aspirin is 2: 2 moles of salicylic acid = 0.833 mass salicylic acid = 0.833 mol x 138.123 g / mol = 115.0 g 115: 78.5 x = 100 x = mass of acid required = 146.6 g
