Is black mystery snail sick?
Hi,
first off…thanks to the person who replied to my last post…very helpful…well now have another problem…my snail seemed fine until two days ago…before I went to bed snail was having great time jumping on and off banana plant in tank…next morning ‘foot’ was scrunched up, it almost looked curled up…then last night snail was floating at top of tank…I understand this is common in apple snails, is it the same for black mystery snails…snail has been very inactive for 2 days…not eating…has a little white gel like substance coming from under shell…could this be sign snail is sick…tank has filter, no heater…snail very, very active before yesterday…right now snail laying upright on point of shell, with front crunched together…not dead, just moved antennae a little…please help…I really hope ‘Gary’ is not about to die…thanks!!!
I have some mystery snails. Sometimes they’re really active and then other times they stay in their shells for days. I’ve also seen them float at the top of the tank and I’ve seen that white slime you mentioned. When my snails lay stationary for extended periods of time, they sometimes leave their “foot” open a little, which is what I think you were asking about in your question. They’re all still alive so I’m going to assume the “dormant” periods are normal.
To be safe, you should check your snail when it’s inactive to make sure it’s not dead. You wouldn’t want it rotting in your tank. As long as your water parameters are in good shape and you haven’t added salt to your tank, your snail should be fine. Also, make sure (if you have fish in your tank) that your snail is getting an adequate amount of food.
My snails are incredibly active at night for some reason. I think this is because that’s when the fish sleep and the snails can finally get some piece in quiet. After I turn the lights out I put sinking pellets in the tank to feed the snails. That way I’m sure the snails are getting fair access to food.
